Carrie; Young Frankenstein Coming to Blu-ray

In an early report to retailers, Fox Home Entertainment has revealed that they will bring the 70's classic horror film 'Carrie' to Blu-ray on October 7th. Additionally, MGM has revealed that they will bring the Mel Brooks classic 'Young Frankenstein' to Blu-ray on that same day. As these are unofficial announcements, no technical specs or special features were announced at this time.

Hitachi Shrinks Blu-ray Camcorder

Hitachi has announced that will release their next generation Blu-ray camcorder, the Hitachi DZ-BD10H, this August in Japan. The camcorder takes the same core design from its predecessor, the BD9H, and put it in a smaller frame. While the camcorder maintains its 30GB hard drive from the last generation, the sensor has been upgraded to 7MP.

Samsung Announced Lower Priced Blu-ray HTIB

Samsung has announced that they will introduce a third home theater in a box (HTIB) to their product line-up this fall. The Samsung HT-BD2E, which is expected to retail for $799, will feature a 5.1 speaker set up with five satellite speakers and a passive subwoofer totaling 800 watts RMS power. The included Blu-ray player will be BonusView capable and decode everything except DTS-HD Master Audio.

X-Files 2 Blu-ray Details Emerge

Movies Online recently caught up with Frank Spotnitz to discuss some of the features on the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'The-X Files: I Want to Believe', which hits theaters this Friday. Initially, he was shocked with the regards to the ability of Blu-ray. He commented, "I had no idea what Blu-Ray could do. I thought it was just a higher definition picture, but it's much more than that."

Today on Blu-ray - July 22nd

Looks like I forgot to do this yesterday, so coming at you, albeit a little delayed, is a breakout of what came out on Blu-ray yesterday. This, of course,was a huge day for the format as we welcome Universal Studios to the family. Not surprising, the studio brought out their big guns with the release of 'The Mummy: Deluxe Edition' and 'The Mummy Returns: Deluxe Edition'.

More TV Coming to Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'Chuck: The Complete First Season' and 'Supernatural: The Complete Third Season' to Blu-ray on November 11th. They have also revealed that 'Torchwood: The Complete First Season' has been delayed two months, and will now be released on November 11th.

George Carlin Goes HD

Various retailers have indicated that MPI Home Video will release 'George Carlin: It's Bad for Ya' and 'Becket' for Blu-ray on November 25th. Art House film studio Opus Arte has also indicated that they will bring 'Il Trovatore: Giuseppe Verdi' and 'Puccini: La Boheme' to Blu-ray on August 26th. As these are all unofficial announcements, no technical specs or special features are known at this time.

Japanese Matrix Blu-ray Boxset Revealed

Warner Home Video Japan has revealed the details for the upcoming Blu-ray box set release of 'The Ultimate Matrix Collection'. The set, at least in Japan, will feature a total of seven discs: four Blu-rays and three DVDs. Each of the three Matrix films will come on its own Blu-ray, with the forth Blu-ray disc containing all nine of the Animatrix episodes in high definition.

Risky Business Blu-ray Gets TrueHD

Warner Home Video has revealed that the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Risky Business' will now include a Dolby TrueHD track instead of the previously planned Dolby Digital track. Last week, Warner admitted that some press material was being sent out with incorrect details and it appears this Blu-ray release was one of those titles affected. No other specs were affected by this change.

Dead Space Coming to Blu-ray

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the animated film 'Dead Space: Downfall' to Blu-ray on October 28th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been announced at this time, but special features will include two exclusive cheat codes and a deleted grave robber scene.

The Strangers Coming to Blu-ray

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman horror film 'The Strangers' to Blu-ray on October 21st, day-and-date with the DVD release. The BD-25 will feature both rated and unrated versions of the film encoded as 2.35:1 1080p. Audio will come in the form of 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio.

Blu-ray Shipments Increase in Japan

According to Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA), shipments of Blu-ray Disc recorders in Japan has, for the first time, broken the 100,000 barrier. In the month of June, approximately 122,000 Blu-ray Disc recorders were sold in Japan, compared to approximately 82,000 the month prior.

Quo Vadis Announced for Blu-ray Release

Warner Home Video has revealed that they will bring the 1951 Mervyn LeRoy religious epic film 'Quo Vadis' to Blu-ray during Spring 2009. The film, which featured a cast list that numbers in the tens of thousands and was filmed on location in Rome, has gone through a special photochemical restoration in order to present the film in a way not seen since its original release over fifty years ago.

Warner Brings JFK to Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Oliver Stone film 'JFK: Ultimate Collector's Edition' to Blu-ray on November 11th, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. No technical specs have been announced at this time, but expect a 1080p VC-1 video encode and most likely a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Constantine Announced for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Keanu Reeves film 'Constantine' to Blu-ray on October 14th. This film represents another Warner Blu-ray "make-up" title, as it was originally released in high definition on the now defunct HD DVD format in June of 2006. Video will be presented in 1080p VC-1 and be accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Sony Plans Four Romantic Comedies for September (Update)

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring four romantic comedies - 'Can't Hardly Wait: 10 Year Reunion Edition', 'My Best Friend's Wedding', 'Maid in Manhattan', and 'Mona Lisa Smile' to Blu-ray on September 30th. Run Fatboy Run Coming to Blu-ray in the US

Warner Home Video in conjunction with New Line Home Entertainment have announced that they will bring the David Schwimmer-directed film 'Run Fatboy Run' to Blu-ray on September 23rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. The film will come on a BD-50 utilizing 1080p VC-1 video and a Dolby Digital soundtrack.

Transsiberian Announced for Blu-ray

First Look Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer film 'Transsiberian' to Blu-ray on November 4th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Attitude Flying Planned for Blu-ray Release

Fly Right Films, an Alaska-based studio, will bring their final product, an instructional aviation film called 'Attitude Flying' to Blu-ray later this fall after it debuts at Air Venture 2008. The films creators are hoping that this film will help prevent further aviation deaths by using their new method of instruction.

Blu-ray Sales Up 300%

Through the first half of the year, consumer spending on Blu-ray titles is up $200M or 300% from the same period last year. Studios, such as 20th Century Fox, are seeing approximately 8% of title sales in the Blu-ray format, with the expectation that it could rise to as much as 12% by the end of this year.
